Paris’s giddy appeal

On fingerprints and fulcrums. With two weeks to go til the end of the year (yes, technically three, but hopefully you’re doing sweet eff all in the time between Christmas and NYE), it’s time to muse a little deeper still.

What’s left its mark on you this year? And what have you left your personal imprint upon? Who/ what/ where has been most touched by your presence?

I’ve long been affected by the notion of exploring - and expanding - the boundaries of our comfort zones. From my jukebox of references: “I think it’s important to touch [your edge]. You can always pull back from it, but at least you know where it is. It’s like when I was a dancer, we were always encouraged to fall in rehearsal, so that you could know what the tipping point of any given moment was. That way, when you did it on stage, you could be sure you were taking it to the edge without falling on your face. It sounds like a cliché, but it’s really just physics:

If you don’t touch the fulcrum, you’ll never gain a felt sense of it, and your movement will be impoverished for it”.
- writer Maggie Nelson, from a profile on Natalie Portman

Where does your comfort zone end, and that electric space of uncertainty begin? What if, in these last few weeks, you were to reach out and let your fingertips graze it?
